Things I have learned in the past 2 weeks...

- I'm grateful for family. I'm grateful that we have been able to have little Lily join our family.

- I'm so grateful for Jas. He has been there for every worry, every fear, tear and smile. He keeps me in balance and helps so much by working so hard for us, helping around the house, helping with Em and he helps me keep my sanity and perspective.

- I'm grateful that Lily is doing as well as she is. She has her moments that make us worry and we do a lot of worrying, but she has good care and she is doing really well for how little and young she is.

-I'm grateful for modern medicine. Lily is hooked up to monitors and they do monitior her closely and when the alarms go off they are right there to work on her and get her regulated quickly. It's nerve racking but they know what they are doing and they really do a good job.

-I'm grateful for transportation. I can't count the times I've been back and forth from my house to the hospital in the past 2 weeks. I'm so glad I have a car that can get me there!!

-I've learned that when things like this happen you just focus on the most important things. It doesn't matter if the house is spotless, if the grocery shopping is done, if the laundry is folded, or any other trivial things. What matters most is that your family is alive and well and that is it!!!

-You can see Lily grabbing on to Jason's finger. She has really long fingers but they are so small she can't wrap them all the way around his finger.
-This was my first and only time being able to hold her. She isn't big enough to maintain her body temperature so they will only take her out once a day for up to 15 minutes, if she is doing really well. Well, she hasn't been able to come out again, since Sunday. It was an awesome moment to finally get to hold my new baby!!! Hopefully we will have a lot more of that coming up soon!

-Lily is holding her small stuffed animal. It looks -big, since it covers her whole body but the bear is only about 8 inches tall.

-This is one of her favorite positions. She kicks those feet out and tucks her arms under her head and enjoys her warm little tanning bed!!

-I got to try and feed her from a bottle today for the first time. She's still learning how to suck and swallow all together but she's getting there slowly.

-I love this picture of Jas looking at her in her bubble. You can see how they have the hand holes to reach in a touch her and her bubble will still maintain a warm temperature.

-We are grateful she is doing so well and being so active. She is breathing well, eating pretty well, and she is active and not on medication at all. She is fiesty and she's a fighter so we have high hopes that she will grow well and eventually be able to come home big and healthy!!!

This is her bubble home (as we tell Em) right now. You can stick your hands in and touch her and it will still maintain a warm temp inside.

Baby Lily

Baby Lily is doing great!!! Yes, she has a name now!! You can see how small she is next to my hand. Also, I am holding the tape measure at 12 inches. She's 15 inches long, but not when she scrunches up!! I put one of my rings almost around all of her toes so it can give you an idea of how little she is!! She is off the ventilator after only 1 day and is breathing on her own, which is amazing for how young and little she is!!! She has oxygen but it's more like a CPAP machine, it's blowing air into her but she is breathing on her own. She loves to stick her feet straight up in the air, it's so funny!!! She still has her eyes covered because she spends most of her time under the lights to help with the jaundice, which is very likely to come because of her age. We are so grateful that she is doing so well and we are so happy to welcome her to our family!!!

BABY HASKINS

Welcome baby Haskins. Name is coming!!! She was born at 3:24 am on Jan. 27th!! She is 9 1/2 weeks early!!! She weighed in at a whopping 3 lbs. 9 oz. and is 15 inches long. They said this is a pretty good size for a 30 weeker, as they are calling her. She's fiesty and doing well. She is in an incubetor and hooked up to a breathing machine, feeding tube, heart and pulse monitor, and a temp monitor. They have the breathing machine on the lowest setting and they are planning to take it out tomorrow, so that is big!

-Jas was gone (supposed to be gone a month) to Virginia for army training. Luckily with some phone calls and a little work we were able to get him home early. He missed the birth but made it here around 1 pm. My mom was with me the whole time and my sister took Em and helped out with her. Paul was here to give me a blessing and help make all the phone calls to get Jas home. I'm so grateful to everyone for their thoughts and prayers and help. We really appreciate it. She is wearing extra, extra premie diapers, they are soooo little. About the size of a purse size kleenex package. Mom and baby are tired but good and grateful that things are going so well!!!

Here's more pictures of us at the dinosaur museum. Em loved digging in the sand for dinosaur bones and she loved to see the brontosauras and the T-rex skeletons. They have some great displays and a lot of fun stuff for the kids to do.

Jason told me we were going to do something fun as a family on Sat. We've been wanting to take Em to the dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving Point. We had a great time!

Em loves dinosaurs and we thought she would like it and she did!! Also, it's a great place to take kids. Museum's can be a litte overwhelming and boring to kids but this one has a ton of interactive and hands on things to keep them interested. They have a giant dinosaur that has velcro legs and spikes, a sandpit with wet sand to dig for plastic dinosaurs and a giant dry sand pit to practice your paleontologist skills and uncover some big dinosaur bones. They also have a lot of hands on fossils, petrified wood and other exibits. It was a fun family activity. I love doing stuff like this in the winter when it's so cold. Its always nice getting out and spending good time with your family too!

We went and picked out our Christmas tree today at a tree farm. We went there last year and thought it was fun so we decided to try it again this year. We finally decided a pine tree with some character!! Some of the trees they have are soooo huge, like our last year's tree. It took up half the living room. We tried to pick one that wasn't quite so full this time! They give you a handsaw and let you cut your own tree down. Em was so excited to help cut the tree down. Then we strapped it to the top of the truck and headed home!! Now we just have to find the stand and get it in here!

Well, we had our ultra sound today. It was awesome looking at all the pictures. It's amazing that you can see and hear the heartbeat, see the spinal cord, internal organs, little fingers and toes and the brain. It really amazes me that they can capture that much detail on the screen!! We brought Em with us and she thought the black areas were the babies long hair, ha ha. So she was convinced it was a girl, well, she's right!! Another girl is coming our way. Jas is going to be so out numbered!! He really thought it was a girl, for weeks now he's been telling me it's a girl!! We are excited. At least I have some practice with a girl!!! Not to mention all the girl toys and pink things we have that can be passed down to the baby!! Em's really glad she's getting a sister. She wasn't so big on the idea of a brother!! So now the real fun begins, picking a name we all agree on!!!

Lagoon

We all went to Lagoon for my mom's work Lagoon day. It was fun! Even though I couldn't ride everything it was so fun watching the kids go on all the rides. It was their first time at an amusement park! They had so much fun and they were so brave. It was cute watching the 3 oldest ones cram into rides together!!

Antelope Island

We finally went to Antelope Island. It's been on my list of places to go for a while!! I've lived here my entire life and I've never been!!! We went out there a few weeks ago just for the day and explored. We went to the visitor center, then drove around to the different beaches to check things out. We went down to the ranch and looked around. They had some old barns, equipment, and some pioneer era houses to look at. Em and Jas tried their hand at roping some stationary animals!!! Trust me, that is a lot harder then it looks!!!

Here is Em near the ranch with a view of the Wasatch mountains in the background. That was my favorite part, the view! At one overlook you could see the Wasatch, Oquirrh, and Stansbury Mountain ranges in the distance. It's strange to be on the island looking east at the mountains. I'm so used to being near the mountains looking at the island in the distance. We definately want to go back and do some hiking, but not in June when those dang biting gnats were out!!! And we think it would be fun to camp there, but not in the heat of the summer, there's not much shade there!! We saw buffalo, a fox, a pronghorn antelope and some birds. I love an adventure and it is nice to get out and see something new! It's nice to go for the day too, a lot less packing is involved!! You felt like you were in kind of a remote place but yet it's not that far to get there!!

Building and growing a garden

Jason built us a box garden and Em helped him! I've been wanting to grow a garden for a couple of years but with Jas being gone and with all the remodeling we've had going on we haven't been able to even think about a garden. This year we decided to do a raised box garden, hoping the dogs would stay out of it!! Also, I wanted something more manageable. The last time we did a garden it was huge and I would spend hours weeding it. Who has time for that!!! I can barely keep up as it is!!! Plus the soil was really rocky and crappy. Now we have good soil and good drainage. So, hopefully it will provide us with some yummy vegies!! I even did squash, even though I don't love it, Em does!! Most of it is growing well!! So I'm excited. And the best part is all 3 of us did it together and we haven't seen one weed so far!!!

I am becoming brave, trying new things!!! I don't know what I've been eating or what's in the water but I've been trying some new things. I know, I know, it's not that big of a deal but I'm the kind of person that sticks to the things I like and am comfortable with for a very long time. I've always had certain "favorites" and they don't seem to change, and I'm fine with that. Chocolate ice cream will always be my favorite, my fav color is always been purple, I've never liked shoes, I like certain styles in decorating and clothing even if they aren't the most popular (like those plaid shirts from the 80ies that are finally coming back in style). But lately, I've been trying some new things. I ordered some shoes online. They are nothing like I have ever worn, I probably won't be able to walk very well in them, and they are super high. Nothing like me. Then I cut my hair. I've had the same "do" forever. It's not the biggest change ever but it's a lot shorter then I've had it since 5th grade. The only reason it was so short then was because of all the medication I was on for my ears so my hair would never grow. I like it so far, still not sure what to do with it, but as long as I can pull it back I'm happy, and it will still go in the ponytail. Also, the dogs have never been allowed in the house but since Penny had 4 puppies I have to let her in the kitchen a lot to feed the rolly poly little fur balls. Also, I had to teach a lesson at church, to the adults!!! That was a first for me. I was trying really hard not to be too nervous and just go with the flow. I feel it went well. Chalk up another new thing for me!!!

Filling in the last foundation hole

-We filled the whole back of the truck up, by hand, with the remaining foundation dirt and unloaded it into the last hole we have!! So now, most of the dirt is gone and we just have 2 feet left to fill in and then we can start putting things back together on this end of the yard! Em was loving every minute of playing in the hole and digging in the dirt!!

Aunt Sherry's visit

-We always have so much fun when Aunt Sherry comes to visit! My mom had us over to dinner one night, so did Christy and we just get to spend a lot of time as a family and catch up!!! It doesn't matter if you live out of state, you can still be close to someone. When Aunt Sherry comes we get to really talk to her and find out what's happening down in sunny CA with our family. She always takes time to ask us about our lives and is very good at listening! I really enjoy our time spent together when she comes!

My parents always have us over for Easter dinner. I thought this was a cute picture of my parents and all their grandkis! There's Trevor, Lucy, Lainey, Emily, and Kevin!! Getting all of them in a picture is a little challenging at this point!!

My parents have us over for dinner, do an Easter egg hunt with the kids in the backyard, and we decorated Easter eggs. I know it's a lot of work for my mom but we all enjoy it. The kids have a blast.

Emily's favorite thing to do in the world is probably swing on the swingset!! She can be pushed for at least a half an hour straight without complaining!!!! The grass that this swing set is on is newly planted, it used to be the dirt mountain we had from doing the foundation. Behind these two you can see the unfinished garage!!

Me and Em, right after I got home from work one night. We have some gorgeous tulips. We have red, yellow, orange and a few pink ones!! Since Jason's mom was from Holland we planted a bunch of them when we moved in. They remind us of Lidy and spring!! Behind us is a section of the yard we've been working on. We have another small dirt hill, which is mostly gone now. I'm making it into a raised flower bed. To the left in this picture behind us is our "grave". We have had it covered with huge boards so no kids fall in. We got all the boards moved and filled up the truck with dirt (from the foundation dirt on the side of our house) and filled in most of the hole, there's about 2 feet left!! So we are making progress around here! At least the tulips give us a nice backdrop to our projects!!

-Trying to get a picture with my parents, grandma and all the grandkids is quite challenging at this point!! Usually you can get one or two of the 5 to actually look at you!!! And usually one or more is trying to escape or crying!!! I'm glad we celebrate birthdays in our family. We don't go over the top but birthdays have always been a big deal in our family and we always get together for presents, cake and ice cream and a few pictures!!! I think it's cool that the kids have a great-grandma that is so involved in their lives. Not many kids can say that! Not many 32 year olds can say they have a grandma that attends so many family functions!!

This is Julie, me, and Ang (and Dax down below) at Emily's b-day party! These 2 have been my friends for what feels like forever!! I've known Ang since 2nd grade and we've been through a lot together, good times and bad. Through it all we've come to know that we can count on each other, share our deepest troubles and enjoy the happy times together.
I've known Jul since 4th grade, but we never (unfortunately) went to school together until college! Snow College was a great learning experience for us and we had a lot of fun. We've remained close even after college and I'm so grateful. I turn to these two when I have questions about kids, recipes, the gospel, family and when I need to vent!! Also, we share the joy in raising kids (relatively the same age as Em), we have fun together and support each other. We may not be able to see each other as frequently as we'd like but I know I can call them anytime and I'm grateful for their friendship!

Mother's day reminders

The Little Things:
Sometimes life gets you down. Sometimes it's stressful, a little too busy, or it can be the quiet mundane chores you are endlessly doing that wear you out but life is good. I love how little reminders pop up to refresh your memory of life's simple little pleasures. Also, I'm glad that sometimes I can be reminded of how good I have it. I was just reading on my cousins blog (Janice) about her gratitude that her husband has been cancer free now for 5 years. She talked about how many wonderful things have happened in their lives over the past 5 years. It's a reminder to be grateful for what you have when you have it!!

Mother's day reminds me of the fact that Jason's mom has been gone now for almost 9 years. I wonder what it would be like for Em to know her other grandma, the one we refer to as "the grandma who's in heaven." It's second nature for Em to say that and she's seen her picture and she knows where she is. I think it would of been nice for us to have more time with her, a lot more time. I only had a mother-in-law for the 1st 3 years of my marriage.

I also miss my grandma but I'm so grateful for the time we had with her. I was lucky to have her in my life for 32 years!! I'm grateful for the love she gave all of her family and she left us with such a legacy of love and faith. I am reminded that there's not a lot of meaningful things you can leave behind when you go, but love is one of those things. Grandma was the perfect example of what a grandma is supposed to be!

I'm grateful for the mom I have. I'm grateful for the things she's taught me and the love and dedication she gave (and still gives) to our family. I'm grateful that she taught me it's good to be a traditional mom and try and teach your kids some good old fashioned work ethic and values. I'm grateful for the good times we've had and the time we get to spend together.

I'm grateful for the oppurtunity I have to be a mom. It's such an incredible job!! Being a mother adds a whole new dimension to life. It is a lot of work and sometimes it is hard but it is so rewarding to get that hug, that painting with her handprints on it, that smile, that laugh. It's so peaceful to watch her sleeping!! It's such a sense of accomplishment when she can learn to write her own name, remember something we read about, and try new things. It keeps you young and reminds me of my childhood as I help her climb a tree, play with play-dough, and push her on the swing. I can see so many traits of Jason in her, and quite a few things she does reminds me of me when I was younger! I can also see things she got from her grandparents and even though one set isn't around to see it they would laugh to see her talking to complete strangers so comfortably. Anyone that knew Lidy knows that Em comes by this honestly. The way she teases everyone is just like Ray! It's fun to see all of the family traits in her and she comes with her own set of traits!! She is a very strong willed, fun loving little one!! It has been one of our struggles to not add more to our family but we sure are grateful for the one we have! I have no idea what we would do without her!!!

So I hope Mother's day will remind us to be thankful for what we have and remind us to enjoy it while we have it!! Life will throw some curve balls but there's always a rainbow after that fierce thundershower!!

Jas came home with a dinosaur kit that had the bones encased in plaster and you had to dig them out and then you can make a dinosaur model. I thought that was cute. Em loves dinosaurs and I love that Jas is so thoughtful and will pick up little things like this so she will have something new and exciting to try out! Plus, it's a great learning experience.

Em was so brave on this ride!! You could make it spin faster, like the teacups at Disneyland, and Em was loving it!! I'm getting too old to spin that much but she kept going!! I had to close my eyes I was getting so dizzy! Em was brave!! That was her first experience with rides and I'd say she's ready for them, at least the kid ones!! Hopefully she takes after her dad and is brave with rides, unlike me!!! We tried mini golfing too!! That was Em's first time doing that! We had to keep moving because there were people behind us but Em loved it. She would hit the ball a couple of times, then pick it up and put it really close the hole, then knock it in!!

We took Jas to Texas Roadhouse for his birthday dinner. Then we went to Hollywood Connections go enjoy the skating, golfing, and rides. Em loved it!!! It was Em's first experience with going on rides!! The first ride on the dragon rollercoaster she was a little scared but she ended up going on it about 5 more times!!!

The Kitchen Facelift

The kitchen facelift!! It went from sticky tiles and yellow paint to the wood floors, newly painted baseboards, new switches, light covers, and heater vent covers, and the green paint. Also, we put all the light fixtures back up from when we were doing the roof. It actually looks like a kitchen!!! It's only a "band-aid" because this window, this big wall and the ceiling will all be going when we get to the kitchen remodeling part of our house. We wanted it to look presentable til we get to that, after everything else is put back together!!

You can see about 3 layers of linoleum that we are ripping out, along with the particle board underneath. We went all the way down to the original '60ies linoleum. Then we changed the yellow to green!!!

The Autorama

We went to the Autorama about a month ago. Em was able to sit in a little dragster that they let you start driving if you are 6!!!

Em loves looking at the cars and is very opinionated about which ones she likes and which ones she doesn't!!! She was really excited about the motorcycles too!! Like father like daughter!! Jas is in heaven that me and Em like to go look at the cars/bikes with him. He's really into cars and always has been. He's restoring his '69 Cougar and he's building (from scratch) a '34 Ford. He likes to get ideas from these shows!! It's a fun family outing.

This is a poem I wrote in high school. It was inspired by my grandpa Hughes who fought in WWII. He used to tell me war stories. He fought in the south Pacific. My Grandpa DeHart was also a WWII survivor. I have a deep respect for those that have given their service for our country. My dad and I were having a discussion tonight about the war stories my grandpa used to tell us and it reminded me of this poem. God Bless America!!

THE SOLDIER

One who was young,
dreaming of being great yet living so simply.
He had a family, working hard just to make it.
The young man was called off to war,
To defend and protect our country.

Many were the battles, great were the losses,
and precious were the lives that were taken.
The men were in the air, on land, on sea, in tanks.
Like great waves they rolled on,
on to what was hoped would be victory.
People fought. Hiding, creeping,
scared, wondering, patriotism, hate, just living.

Why war? The enemy becomes
an angry animal, waiting to attack.
The roaring, the shooting, bombing, fire, smoke...
The devastation, ashes, ruins, death.
Inhumane actions, hate rumbling and stirring
all the emotions of the human soul.

Great love, to let this country live on,
great hope, to save each individual,
no matter what effort it required.
The anguish of even one soul lost.

Tears couldn't explain what the emotions felt.
The families told of loved ones lost,
back home working for the war effort.
Each day their lives were filled with worry,
wondering if they would return safely.

The scars left. The war was won on
the outside. But inside...
Each day is a constant battle to go on.

The young man sent off to war has now

The country prospers, the hate subsides.

Our Halloween Party

We had a great turn out for our Halloween party. We had so much fun seeing all the kids dressed up. We had treats and games and songs and let the kids play. Our little group of friend is growing, everyone has 3-4 kids now (except us). They range in age from 7 down to 4 months old.

Gardner Village

Dax and Em are just 3 months apart and get along great. They heard music over the speakers and they broke out dancing!! I love how free they are at 4!! The want to dance or sing they just let loose, they don't care what other people think about it!!!

We love to go to the zoo. We went for the fall harvest activity. It was still really nice weather at the beginning of Oct. Jas met us there after work. We got to see the tigers play in the water!

Today was Em's first day at the Little Lancer Preschool!!! She was so excited to go to school and to wear her new shoes. She loved going! I was more nervous then she was!!!

One of our favorite family activities is going to car shows. We went to the Peach Days car show up in Brigham City on Sat. Em likes making side trips to the playground while we are there.

Farewell to grandma DeHart... after the funeral luncheon we all gave her smiles to remember us by. We will miss you grandma, we are all so grateful that we have this wonderful family, grandma left us a legacy of faith and family and we won't forget it! This is the cousins and their spouses.

Em was a big fan of the fish! She liked to hold them and pet them!! It is so fun to fish in this river, we always have good luck here and you can't top the scenery. You just wade in and reel 'em in!

The annual DeHart reunion-
We had a "bear hunt" for the kids, crafts, horseshoes, tubing in the river, an auction, a movie at dusk, a coloring contest, an awesome dinner, and lots of talking around the fire. Did I mention I won the horseshoe competition? Of course that's with a lot of thanks to my partner, Rickey! Janice, Gaylene and Fez (and families) did a great job putting everything together!! I don't know how we will compete next year! Everything was sooo much fun and it was so good to catch up with everyone!

The matching shirts were a big success!! The Larry DeHart family had red shirts, the Curly DeHart family had yellow, the Ray DeHart family had green, and Uncle Dale had blue. It was fun to see where everyone belonged! I got a 4 generation picture with my grandpa, mom, me and Em in our matching shirts. The new spot was awesome too, we had tons of room for parking, tents, and it was right next to the river!

Over Labor day we went to the Uintahs and went fishing. Sonya, William and Will and Stanley joined us for part of the time. We fished at Mirror and Teapot lakes. It was so peaceful and relaxing.

Em loved her worm. She would carry it around everywhere. She was happy as long as she had her worm with her!

Em was following Jas down to the fishing hole. He was singing marching cadences and she was copying him. We took a walk along the Falls River and saw the confluence of the Bechler and Falls rivers.

Emily was hanging out with grandpa on the hike. Janet and Teri are laughing at Em taking a bath in a bucket in camp. She thought it felt so good she didn't want to get out so we kept her warm with her towel. We heated up the water so it was nice and warm.

We had a big fish fry with all the fish that we caught. They were delicious!! Even Em loved her first fish. Em and my mom were cooking dinner in camp.

Teri, Em and Janet were down at the fishing hole and Em was trying out her new pink pole! The big waterfall that Becky and Emily are in front of is Cave Falls. It's so pretty.

Jas gets right in that river and fishes. He was reeling them in so fast! One right after another. The scenery here is incredible. It's so peaceful and quiet here, except for the sound of the river! We always have the river to ourselves in this section! The royal coachman fly does the trick still!!

Becky caught the biggest fish of the trip! He was just over 12 inches! That's my biggest catch ever. Em liked to "pet" the fish. She loved holding on to the stringer and she named the fish that she reeled in. That was her first time fishing and she reeled in one that was just her size!

Janet and Emily were hanging out on the log watching us fish. Don't let her fool you though, Janet doesn't just observe, she catches lots of big fish!!!

Janet and Dave brought ladder golf to play in camp! We had so much fun with that one! Em fell asleep in the tent, all that mountain air just wore her out! Grandma brought her a surprise grab bag to go through. And there's me hanging out in camp.
